Following the successful completion of a 42.2km marathon on May 27th, we are proud to announce that Peter Harris was able to raise close to CAN$3,100 for the Afghan-Canadian Community Center (ACCC). The funds raised will be matched by the Cadmus Foundation, providing a total of over CAN$6,200 for the ACCC, or the equivalent of the school’s rent for one year.

Peter had the following to say regarding his experience: “The Ottawa marathon was an incredible experience. Running 42.2kms takes a lot of concentration and effort and I managed to do it in 3 hours and 53 minutes, well under my race goal of 4 hours. The last 5 kms were especially difficult and I had to fight to keep running because my legs were aching and all I wanted to do was stop and walk – but I refused to slow down and came across the finish line well under my goal.

You should know that thinking about you, your students, and many of the people I met in Afghanistan during my time there kept me focused and determined to have a strong finish in the race. Your efforts to educate women, and your students’ interest in learning and making things better, inspired me. I couldn’t stop and let you down.

In the end, my family, friends and colleagues were extremely generous and wanted to help to help in this way. Giving generously, they sent me almost $3100 Canadian and this will be doubled by the Cadmus Foundation in Calgary. I am confident this money will be put to good use at the school and, if you get the chance, I would love updates on how you spend it. By running for the ACCC, I managed to get many people interested in your efforts and now they are supporting and cheering for a successful period at the Centre. I hope it all helps.”

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Peter and his generous supporters, who have helped to make our dream of providing higher education to the people of Kandahar a reality.
