ACCC Director Receives Honourary Degree from SAIT

ACCC Director Ehsanullah Ehsan receives an honourary degree from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology
Ehsanullah Ehsan, Director of the Afghan-Canadian Community Center, was awarded an honourary degree by the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology on June 2nd in recognition of his contribution to women’s education and human rights in Kandahar. In his acceptance speech, Ehsan delivered a moving tribute to those who had helped him to create the Afghan-Canadian Community Center:
“Through the support provided by SAIT, the Government of Canada and the Canadian people, we have given people hope for a better future. We have created what has been called ‘an oasis of decency and civility’ – a place where women and men alike can go to discuss, explore, understand and learn. The sight of beautiful Afghan girls glued to computers and books at the Centre is a symbol of the drastic social change taking root in Afghanistan. Everyone at SAIT should be very proud of what they have helped to create.
You – the great people of Canada – have shown incredible generosity in supporting my country and my educational initiatives. Individual donors and the Government of Canada have made significant contributions through the Canadian International Learning Foundation’s Afghan School Project, and through the Canadian International Development Agency. With this generous support, we are proudly moving the Afghan Canadian Community Centre – and the people of Afghanistan – toward self-sustainability and gender equality.”

Ehsanullah Ehsan delivers his acceptance speech
He also had his own words of wisdom to pass along to the SAIT graduating class of 2009:
“By receiving the knowledge imparted to you by your teachers, you have been entrusted with a sacred gift, one that few people in this world have the opportunity to receive. The importance of this knowledge cannot be over stated – it empowers men and women alike to support themselves, their families, and improve their community. Knowledge is the backbone of society, and the key to peace and prosperity.
I hope that you will use this gift to realize your dreams – and to help others realize theirs. As one of the keepers of the sacred gift of knowledge, you have a remarkable opportunity to share this gift and, by doing so, to save humanity from the threat of oppression, war and deprivation. I urge you, as citizens of the world, to use this knowledge not only to benefit yourselves, but to also create hope for those who would learn, if only given the chance.”

Ehsan also collected certificates on behalf of the ACCC students studying at SAIT, who were unable to make the trip to Canada for security reasons. Ehsan has since returned to Kandahar, and will soon be holding a ceremony to present the first cohort of SAIT students with their academic certificates.
Ehsan’s visit to Calgary was covered by numerous media outlets, including Global National, the Toronto Star, CBC, the Calgary Sun, the Calgary Herald, Canada AM, and the Winnipeg Free Press.
The Afghan School Project would like to thank everyone at SAIT, CIDA, and the Government of Canada who made his visit possible. To help us offer life-changing education to a greater number of women in Kandahar, please Donate.

The people of Kandahar and south west region are proud of Mr. Ehsan
Dear Supporters,
We have aired few trails for Ehsan’s interview on our radio to let people know that an important story is coming. The trials will continue the whole day today. Then we will broadcast Mr.Ehsan’s whole interview. During the last few hours, we have received hundreds of calls from our listeners across south region. They are not only anxious to hear the interview, but are extremely delighted and proud that an ordinary Afghan brings home such a big honor from Canada .
One caller said, ‘ This is a big reputation for our city. We never forget the struggles of Mr. Ehsan. Mr. Ehsan is the person who served our youth, our children for years. We are really glad hearing the trails of his interview and eager to hear his complete interview soon. The caller added that this is big honor and will motivate our children our young generation to give more focus to get education. It is all the efforts of Mr.Ehsan and his active team and generous friends supporting him in his noble work. We pray for his long and successful life.’
Really sir we have few such success stories so no wonder how happy people are about your story.

Dear Ali,
I think for writing or copying needs an art and is! It doesn’t mean that you cut and paste something from somewhere. The important thing is what you find comparable to that issue and then according to that issue you are going to search for some good sentences and prefer that for your subject.
I didn’t mind but to express your feelings you need something special and desirable to show it, whether that is a poem copied, or an application! However it needs time and research.
July 5th, 2009 at 4:01 am
Dear Yelda,
I agree what you have mentioned in your comment, every body researches for something special, I also search for more desirable and craving sentences.
Actually I meant that may be Meena has also come across with the same sentences and words you had pasted. My milestone was just to tell you that it was not essential to mention such things.

Ali Raza

Dear ACCC Administration,
Greetings:
I wish my idea are acceptable for you.
My name is Khan Khadim and one the residents of Kandahar. I am working with LGCD/USAID as Technical Advisor in Kandahar.
In addition I am studying English at ACCC. For the last six months, I have found out that ACCC is making remarkable progress day by day. Many people have come to the center and standing in cues for taking admission at ACCC. Sometimes there is even no chance for people as ACCC is overcrowded with too many people coming and studying positively.
This course has left a remarkable prestige and publicity in Kandahar communities. Not alone young men and women taking interest in this center, but also aged people come to this school for an education.
The people of Kandahar would like to see this course expand its programs. First there will be more enlightenment in the region and secondly more people will get jobs because of the valuable skills taught at ACCC.
I just have one suggestion: I would like the ACCC administration to put up a memory book in which guests, visitor will write their suggestions and memories of ACCC remarkable activities. I have seen a lot of visitors of ACCC and they have told me that this is an excellent program. So I would like that these things be noted in the ACCC memory book.
I would also suggest if ACCC put up a complaint box so that if ACCC students have any ideas/opinion for further betterment of ACCC would be great.

Hi Everyone,
I have an interesting story to share.
It was 2002, when we heard that a training program in computer and English language has opened under a man whose name is Ehsan who has recently returned from Pakistan to serve his Afghan brothers and sisters. Teaching English and computer to women by men was a strange news in Kandahar. But parents said that Ehsan taught both men and women in Pakistan and there he strictly applied cultural values, respect and moral conducts. Soon my parents wanted me to join the school. After I studied happily for a few months, the school got crowded, many girls came and Mr. Ehsan decided that children should leave as he announced that his program should remain only as an adult education program. So he came to our class one day and asked the teacher if he could speak to the students. As soon as I saw him I slipped down the chair and hid between chairs. But he saw me and took me and all the other children out of the classroom. The other children left for homes, but I did not. Instead, I stood under a tree there and continued to weep in despair. I was deeply disappointed. Ehsan showed up again and walked towards me. I was more afraid and thought that he is going to take me out of the school now. As he came nearer, he was not aiming at me actually. He got into his car. As he started his car to drive, he saw me in tears. He immediately stopped the car and got off the car and asked me why I was weeping. I told him I was crying because he took me out of the class. On telling him this, I noticed how sad he became (that I was sorry for him) and how tender he became and how much pity he took upon me. He took me to his office and called all the teachers to his office. He told all of them to allow the children back to classes.
Happily I was in the class again. I studied hard and always got first position. Today I am a teacher teaching English to many other students. I am paid well and I am supporting my self, my family and my country __ Congratulations Ehsan! You deserve the Honorary Degree. How wise the people of Canada are to give this honor to the right person at the right time.

The Role of Women in Society
Women are important in our society. Every woman has her own job or duty in this
modern society in which men are still the ’strongest gender’;. We can´t forget that
women´s life is a lot more complicated than a man´s life. A woman has to take care of
her own personal life and if she is a mother , she has to take care also about her
children´s life too. Marriaged women have lots of worries and believe it or not , they
carry out a more stressfull life than marriaged men.
Several times in my life I have heard commentaries about the lack of importance of
women. I am personally against these kind of commentaries. In my life the most
important person I remember is my mother. She is a professional also , but besides her
profession , she always took good care of me. We can´t forget that all human beings
come right from a woman. We can´t ignore that is a woman the one who has to live
with her own life and also learn the right cares for rescent born babies in order to
garantee our safety and the chance to survive.

Few points for the teachers to remember and have a good class.
1: Know your students: Understand their learning
styles, strengths and weaknesses. Don’t assume the whole class group learns the same way.
2:Make students take notes often and force them regularly review them. How can teachers do that? Surprisingly, each student in our Fish Bowl valued pop quizzes as the most effective way to “guarantee” students will pay attention in class, take notes and study them.
3: Start each class period by reviewing the previous class session’s learnings and sum up learning at the end of each class period.
4: Lectures into sections for optimal retrieval of information. This was the most requested item for students. In order to take the best notes and confer with other students, students want teachers to employ lecture strategies.

Principles of Language Learning:
Language learning principles are generally sorted into three sub-groupings: Cognitive Principles, Affective Principals and Linguistic Principles. Principles are seen as theory derived from research, to which teachers need to match classroom practices. Here are some brief summaries of the principles that fall into each grouping:
Cognitive Principles:
Automaticity: Subconcious processing of language with peripheral attention to language forms;
Meaningful Learning: This can be contrasted to Rote Learning, and is thought to lead to better long term retention;
Anticipation of Rewards: Learners are driven to act by the anticipation of rewards, tangible or intangible;
Intrinsic Motivation: The most potent learning “rewards” are intrinsically motivated within the learner;
Strategic Investment: The time and learning strategies learners invest into the language learning process.
Affective Principles:
Language Ego: Learning a new language involves developing a new mode of thinking – a new language “ego”;
Self-Confidence: Success in learning something can be equated to the belief in learners that they can learn it;
Risk-Taking: Taking risks and experimenting “beyond” what is certain creates better long-term retention;
Language-Culture Connection: Learning a language also involves learning about cultural values and thinking.
Linguistic Principles:
Native Language Effect: A learner’s native language creates both facilitating and interfering effects on learning;
Interlanguage: At least some of the learner’s development in a new language can be seen as systematic;
Communicative Competence: Fluency and use are just as important as accuracy and usage – instruction needs to be aimed at organizational, pragmatic and strategic competence as well as psychomotor skills.
This is a very brief overview of various language learning principles, drawn heavily from H. Douglas Brown’s explanation (see resources for reference). You may be able to come up with more or different interpretations yourself. However you view language learning principles, these should form the basis or backdrop of the techniques you choose to use and the choices you make in the language learner classroom.

I just thought I should write a few sentences to thank the team members in Kandahar, Kabul, Ottawa and New York for looking after ACCC during my leave. As I watched I saw everything from Carleton e-schooling, SAIT Distance Education Program/SAIT Business Diploma Program, Skype Program, ACCC regular classes, Education Generation Program, communication and ACCC Administration activities were highly satisfactorily administered. It does seem like ACCC has got a strong and cohesive team to serve people in need without any greed and selfishness.
I also thought I should name a few members of the team who worked very hard during these few days: Hashim and Qaseem, as always, kept our 70 computers in tip top conditions everyday for students use; Shir Mohammad Kandahari fully organized and coordinated Skype classes, schedules and programs and reported that now over 40 students of ACCC are positively enrolled on Skype communication program, the English language program; Hamayoon and Esmat organized and managed ACCC activities; Dawood assisted e-schooling students with their preparation for exam; Esmat and Ilyas worked on students profiles to complete for students education sponsorship; Esmat worked on handling contract services; Ryan and Ruiz wrote proposals; Ruiz also wrote a business course curriculum; Hamayoon, Esmat and Naghma organized a slide show about an Afghan woman hero for ACCC students and families; Ahmadi Sab supervised the Helmand training program while Abdullah supervised Zabul training programs. All teachers of ACCC, despite increased heat and other challenges in Kandahar, gave full attendance to their classes and shared knowledge and information with their hundreds of fellow sisters and brothers studying at ACCC. Ehsan/myself, Ryan and Vicky directed, coordinated and closely supervised all the programs.
