ACCC Celebrates Spring Graduation
Students, teachers, parents and community leaders gathered at the Afghan-Canadian Community Center (ACCC) on May 11th to celebrate the graduation of 79 students from various ACCC programs. 60 of the graduates were women, graduating from specially designed employment-oriented courses in fields such as Leadership, Business Communication and Human Resources. These women were applauded for their bravery and dedication in light of the challenges facing Afghan women.

- ACCC Director Ehsanullah Ehsan addresses guests during graduation

The ACCC offers employment-focused education and training that ensures graduates have the skills they need for employment success in the city of Kandahar and throughout Afghanistan during this critical time of rebuilding. More than half of the ACCC budget is provided by the Government of Canada through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). The ACCC also benefits from ongoing partnerships with both the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and the Canadian International Learning Foundation (CanILF).
The Deputy Governor of Kandahar Ghulam Jelani Hamayun, Director of Women’s Affairs Rona Tarin, Youth Affairs Manager Nisar Ahmad Arya, and other local community leaders attended the ceremony and expressed their pride in the students and school. After taking a tour of ACCC classrooms and speaking to students and teachers, they called the ACCC “a great success, and a sign of a progressive and peaceful Afghanistan.”
In addition to the women’s achievements, the ceremony also marked the graduation of 19 men from an English Language course that was offered in partnership with the American University of Afghanistan. During the ceremony, certificates were also awarded to six “Youth Champions of the Year” in recognition of their achievements in education, sport, and literature. Three female students of the ACCC were among the youth award recipients.

ACCC Director Ehsanullah Ehsan spoke at the ceremony about how the occassion represents the successes and achievements of the ACCC and of the students. In just four years, the school and its students have made impressive progress on important issues such as gender equality, capacity building, education and employment. Ehsan emphasized the courage and dedication of his female students for pursuing their education and succeeding despite the continued challenges that women face in Kandahar.
Ehsan also took the opportunity to thank Canadian donors, volunteers, and CIDA for their continued financial and administrative support. This was the first graduation ceremony to be held at the new ACCC Resource Center, a facility founded through donations made to the Canadian International Learning Foundation’s Afghan School Project. The Resource Center is large enough to accomodate 200 people and will be equipped with all of the furniture and technology necessary to serve as both an everyday research lab and as a public forum for student events. More than $15,000 has been raised for the ACCC’s Resource Center, and a further $10,000 is required for its completion.
The event was covered by local, national and international media, including Kandahar Television, Hewad Television, VOA Television (through Radio Television of Afghanistan), Shamshad Television, Surgar Weekly Newspaper, Benawa.com, Kalid Radio and Afghan Azada Radio.

Top 10 Most-Positive Habits of Life
1.Set goals. Did you know that the most successful people all share the common positive habit of goal setting? A study was done to determine the importance of goal setting. College students who had gone on to achieve great success in business were asked to list their habits. The students who had made a habit of setting goals were in the top 3% of earnings in the population! It is almost impossible to overestimate the value of goal-setting as a positive habit. Goal setting is simple, yet 97% of the population never do it. By making goal setting a positive habit, you can start placing yourself in the top 3% of the population of successful people.
2. Stop worrying. Worry occurs in your imagination, not in reality. Worry is a function of fear, and fear is your subconscious’s way of telling you that it is uncomfortable with something and your subconscious will make you miserable until the problem goes away… but the problem is that worrying doesn’t solve anything. The quickest way (in fact the only way) to resolve something that bothers you is to act in the present, in reality, outside the context of your fear. Inside its context… you could wrestle with it forever, and it will only make you unhappy and powerless.
3. Appreciation. It is easy to take things for granted, especially if you’re not exactly where you want to be in life. But, even when you’re not where you want to be, there is still plenty to be grateful for. I try to take time each day to reflect on what I’ve accomplished, what I have in my life, and just appreciate all of it.
4. Don’t be afraid by failure. In order to succeed, first you have to try. If your fear of fiasco is greater than your desire to succeed, odds are good that you won’t try, and therefore cannot succeed.
What’s the worst that could realistically happen, and how much of it is in your head?
Again, this becomes an exercise in spotting how much your ego rules you. The idea here is to become the person whose ego serves them- because your ego is an incredibly powerful and amazing part of you- but it can be a cruel master if you choose to serve it.
5. Find a good mentor. Everyone needs at least one good role model. A mentor is a person that one can look up to, usually seen as a trusted counselor or guide. All the successful people I have ever known have had a mentor at some point in their life, someone who taught them and encouraged them to take risks with new experiences.
6. Start everyday with a positive mind-set. Upon awakening make the commitment to face the day and whatever it brings with a positive frame of mind. Prepare yourself for the fact that everything may not go smoothly or as planned, and be willing to handle any challenges you’re faced with (we know there will be some).
7. Practice gratitude.
Be grateful for and focus on the good things you have in your life. Many of us get in the habit of sweating the “small stuff” and let it get in the way of appreciating the important things – family, friends, good health, freedom and the many opportunities we enjoy. When we let that happen it downplays the fact that we really do have much to be grateful for.
8. Cultivate patience. No matter how motivated you are, things do not always happen immediately or when you want them. Therefore it is absolutely imperative to develop great patience, and allow your goals to manifest naturally.
9. Always learn something new. Make a conscious effort to keep your brain active and functioning at optimum levels. Learn a new vocabulary word or a new piece of information as often as you can. It will keep you sharp and alert.
10. Respect and treat your body right. Your body will treat you as you treat it, so it’s vital that you get out with it and keep it healthy. What’s more, exercise reduces stress, helps you rest better, sharpens your mind, lengthens your life, and improves its’ quality
With exercise, your body becomes stronger, your energy levels go up, your bones become stronger… and with an active sense of play, exercise can be just plain fun. It doesn’t necessarily follow that more is better. Too much can be worse than not enough- it can lead to injuries and other health problems.

Types of Knowledge
Philosophers typically divide knowledge into three categories: personal, procedural, and propositional. It is the last of these, propositional knowledge, that primarily concerns philosophers. However, understanding the connections between the three types of knowledge can be helpful in clearly understanding what is and what is not being analysed by the various theories of knowledge.
Personal Knowledge
The first kind of knowledge is personal knowledge, or knowledge by acquaintance. This is the kind of knowledge that we are claiming to have when we say things like “I know Mozart’s music.”
Prodecural Knowledge
The second kind of knowledge is procedural knowledge, or knowledge how to do something. People who claim to know how to juggle, or how to drive, are not simply claiming that they understand the theory involved in those activities. Rather, they are claiming that actually possess the skills involved, that they are able to do these things.
Propositional Knowledge
The third kind of knowledge, the kind that philosophers care about most, is propositional knowledge, or knowledge of facts. When we say things like “I know that the internal angles of a triangle add up to 180 degress” or “I know that it was you that ate my sandwich”, we are claiming to have propositional knowledge

Advantages & Disadvantages
of Nuclear Energy
ADVANTAGES:
Nuclear energy tackles 3 of the greatest problems humanity has encountered in its struggle to get energy.
a)Nuclear power plants don’t require a lot of space.
b)It doesn’t pollute (it does, but in a very different way… more about it further on.)
c)Nuclear energy is by far the most concentrated form of energy.
DISADVANTAGES:
• One of the main disadvantages of nuclear energy is that nuclear explosions produce radiation, this radiation harms the cells of the body which can make humans sick or even cause them death. Illness can appear or strike people years after they were exposed to nuclear radiation.
• A possible type of reactor disaster is known as a meltdown. In a meltdown, the fission reaction of an atom goes out of control, which leads to a nuclear explosion releasing great amounts of radiation.
Here are some examples of meltdowns that have happened through history::
• In 1979, at the Three Mile Island near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, the cooling system of a nuclear reactor failed. Radiation escaped, forcing tens of thousands of people to run away. Fortunately the problem was solved minutes before a total meltdown would have occurred, and there were no deaths.
• In 1986, a much worse disaster hit Russia’s Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In this incident, a large amount of radiation escaped from the reactor. Hundreds of thousands of people were exposed to the radiation. Several dozen died within a few days. In the upcoming years, thousands more may die of cancers induced by the radiation.
• Reactors produce nuclear waste products which emit dangerous radiation, because they could kill people who touch them, they cannot be thrown away like ordinary garbage. Nowadays, lots of nuclear wastes are stored in special cooling pools at the nuclear plants.
• The USA plans to move all its nuclear was to an isolated underground dump by the year 2010.
• In 1957,nuclear wastes buried at a dump site in Russia’s Ural Mountains, near Moscow, mysteriously exploded. This caused the death of dozens of people
• Another disadvantage is that nuclear reactors only last for about forty to fifty years.

Most Annoying Grammar Mistakes in English
1. Third conditional
“If I would have known about the party, I would have gone to it.”
This is INCORRECT, although commonly used, especially in American English.
The correct form is:
If + had + past participle, would + have + past participle
* “If I had known about the party, I would have gone.”
This is CORRECT.
——————————————————————————–
2. Don’t vs Doesn’t
“He don’t care about me anymore.”
This is INCORRECT.
Doesn’t, does not, or does are used with the third person singular – words like he, she, and it.
Don’t, do not, or do are used for other subjects.
* “He doesn’t care about me anymore.”
This is CORRECT.
——————————————————————————–
3. Bring vs Take
“When we go to the party on Saturday, let’s bring a bottle of wine.”
This is INCORRECT.
When you are viewing the movement of something from the point of arrival, use “bring”:
* “When you come to the party, please bring a bottle of wine.”
This is CORRECT.
When you are viewing the movement of something from the point of departure, use “take”:
* “When we go to the party, let’s take a bottle of wine.”
This is CORRECT.
——————————————————————————–
4. Fewer vs Less
Sign at the checkout of a supermarket: “Ten items or less”.
This is INCORRECT.
You can count the items, so you need to use the number word “fewer”. These nouns are countable.
* “Ten items or fewer.”
This is CORRECT.
If you can’t count the substance, then you should use “less”. These nouns are uncountable.
* “You should eat less meat.”
This is CORRECT.
——————————————————————————–
5. However
“We were supposed to go to the dance last night, however, it was cancelled because of lack of interest.”
This is INCORRECT.
A semicolon, rather than a comma, should be used to link these two complete sentences:
* “We were supposed to go to the dance last night; however, it was cancelled because of lack of interest.”
This is CORRECT.
It should be noted that there ARE situations in which you can use a comma instead of a semi-colon:
* “The match at Wimbledon, however, continued despite the bad weather.”
This is CORRECT.
There is only one complete sentence in this example. It is not a compound sentence.
——————————————————————————–
6. Have vs Of
“I never would of thought that he’d behave like that.”
This is INCORRECT.
It should be would have:
* “I never would have/would’ve thought that he’d behave like that.”
This is CORRECT.
It’s the same for should and could:
“He should of come with me.”
This is INCORRECT.
* “He should have/should’ve come with me.”
This is CORRECT.
“She could of had anything she wanted.”
This is INCORRECT.
* “She could have had anything she wanted.”
This is CORRECT.
——————————————————————————–
7. Double negative
“I’m not speaking to nobody in this class.”
This is INCORRECT.
Since ‘not’ is a negative, you cannot use ‘nobody’ in this sentence:
* “I’m not speaking to anybody in this class.”
This is CORRECT.
——————————————————————————–
8. Present perfect
“He has took the train.”
This is INCORRECT.
The correct form for the present perfect is:
would + have + past participle
* “He has taken the train.”
This is CORRECT.
——————————————————————————–
9. Went vs Gone
“I should have went to school yesterday.”
This is INCORRECT.
The correct form is:
should + have + past participle
* “I should have gone to school yesterday.”
This is CORRECT.
——————————————————————————–
10. Its vs It’s
“Its going to be sunny tomorrow.”
This is INCORRECT.
It’s is the contraction of It is:
* “It’s going to be sunny tomorrow.”
This is CORRECT.
“What’s that? I can’t remember it’s name.”
This is INCORRECT.
Its is a possessive pronoun that modifies a noun:
* “What’s that? I can’t remember its name.”
This is CORRECT.

1. Loose vs. Lose
This one drives a lot of people crazy, including me. In fact, it’s so prevalent among bloggers that I once feared I was missing something, and somehow “loose” was a proper substitute for “lose” in some other English-speaking countries. Here’s a hint: it’s not.
If your pants are too loose, you might lose your pants.
2. Me, Myself, and I
One of the most common causes of grammatical pain is the choice between “me” and “I.” Too often people use “I” when they should use “me,” because since “I” sounds stilted and proper, it must be right, right? Nope.
The easy way to get this one right is to simply remove the other person from the sentence and then do what sounds correct. You would never say “Give I a call,” so you also wouldn’t say “Give Chris and I a call.” Don’t be afraid of me.
And whatever you do, don’t punt and say “myself” because you’re not sure whether “me” or “I” is the correct choice. “Myself” is only proper in two contexts, both of which are demonstrated below.
Many consider Chris a punk, but I myself tolerate him. Which brings me to ask myself, why?
3. Different than vs. Different from
This one slips under the radar a lot, and I’ll bet I’ve screwed it up countless times. It boils down to the fact that things are logically different from one another, and using the word “than” after different is a grammatical blunder.
This vase is different from the one I have, but I think mine is better than this one.
4. Improper Use of the Apostrophe
Basically, you use an apostrophe in two cases:
For contractions (don’t for do not)
To show possession (Frank’s blog means the blog belongs to Frank)
If still in doubt, leave the apostrophe out. It causes more reader confusion to insert an apostrophe where it doesn’t belong than it does to omit one. Plus, you can always plead the typo defense if you leave an apostrophe out, but you look unavoidably dumb when you stick one where it doesn’t belong.
5. Parallelism
Back when I talked about bullet points, one of the tips involved keeping each bullet item in parallel by beginning with the same part of speech. For example, each item might similarly begin with a verb like so:
deliver…
prompt…
cause…
drive…
When writing a list of items in paragraph form, this is even more crucial, and failing to stay in parallel can result in confusion for readers and scorn from English majors. Check out this non-parallel list in a sentence:
Over the weekend, Kevin bought a new MacBook Pro online, two software programs, and arranged for free shipping.
Do you see the problem? If not, break the list into bullet points and it becomes clear:
Over the weekend, Kevin:
Bought a new MacBook Pro online
Two software programs
Arranged for free shipping
Stick the word “ordered” in front of “two software programs” and you’re in parallel. Your readers will subconsciously thank you, and the Grammar Nazis won’t slam you.
6. i.e. vs. e.g.
Ah, Latin… you’ve just gotta love it. As antiquated as they might seem, these two little Latin abbreviations are pretty handy in modern writing, but only if you use them correctly.
The Latin phrase id est means “that is,” so i.e. is a way of saying “in other words.” It’s designed to make something clearer by providing a definition or saying it in a more common way.
Copyblogger has jumped the shark, i.e., gone downhill in quality, because Brian has broken most of his New Year’s resolutions.
The Latin phrase exempli gratia means “for example”, so e.g. is used before giving specific examples that support your assertion.
Copyblogger has jumped the shark because Brian has broken most of his New Year’s resolutions, e.g., promising not to say “Web 2.0,” “linkbait,” or “jumped the shark” on the blog in 2007.
7. Could of, Would of, Should of
Please don’t do this:
I should of gone to the baseball game, and I could of, if Billy would of done his job.
This is correct:
I should have gone to the baseball game, and could have, if Billy had done his job.
Why do people make this mistake?
They could’ve, should’ve, would’ve been correct, except that the ending of those contractions is slurred when spoken. This creates something similar to a homophone, i.e., a word that is pronounced the same as another word but differs in meaning, e.g., of, which results in the common grammatical mistake of substituting of for have.

The 10 mysteries of human behaviour that science can’t explain
1 – Blushing: Charles Darwin struggled to explain why evolution made us turn red when we lie, which alerts others. However, some think it may help diffuse confrontation or foster intimacy by revealing weakness.
2 – Laughter: mood-improving endorphins are released when we laugh, which seems an obvious reason to do it but a 10-year study muddied the waters when it found more laughter is produced by banal comments than jokes.
3 – Kissing: the explanation for kissing is unlikely to be genetic as not all human societies do it. There are theories that it is associated with memories of breastfeeding and that ancient humans weaned their children by feeding them from their mouths, which reinforced the link between sharing saliva and pleasure.
4 – Dreaming: Sigmund Freud’s theory of dreams expressing our subconscious desires have been generally discredited and it is recognised that they help us process emotions, but the reason why we see such strange visions has not been properly explained.
5 – Superstition: unusual but reassuring habits make no evolutionary sense; however, ancient humans would have benefited from not dismissing a lion’s rustle in the grass as a gust of wind. Religion seems to tap into this impulse.
6 – Picking your nose: the unappealing but common habit of ingesting ‘nasal detritus’ offers almost no nutritional benefit, so why do a quarter of teenagers do it, on average four times a day? Some think it boosts the immune system.
7 – Adolescence: no other animal undergoes the stroppy, unpredictable teenage years. Some suggest it helps our large brain reorganise itself before adulthood or that it allows experimentation in behaviour before the responsibility of later years.
8 – Altruism: giving things away with no certain return is odd behaviour in evolutionary terms. It may help with group bonding or simply give pleasure.
9 – Art: painting, dance, sculpture and music could all be the human equivalent of a peacock’s tail in showing what a good potential mate someone is. However, it could also be a tool for spreading knowledge or sharing experience.
10 – Body hair: fine hair on the body and thick hair on the genitals is the opposite of what occurs in primates, our close animal relatives. Suggested reasons for pubic hair include a role in radiating scent, providing warmth or even protecting from chafing.

14 Research-Proven Ways To Boost Brain Power
Until just a few years ago, doctors believed that the brain stopped making new neural connections – meaning that the memory began to get irreversibly worse – when the body stopped developing, usually in the early 20s. And doctors knew that, like any other part of the body, neurons weaken as people age. Loss of brain function due to neural breakdown was assumed to be a normal, unavoidable part of aging. It turns out they were wrong.
In the past few years, it has become clear that you can, in fact, make new neurons starting in your 20s and continuing well into old age. You can literally rewire the brain with new parts as the older parts wear out. How?
There are lots of things you can do right now to preserve, protect and enhance your gray matter.
1Physical exercise
A healthy body really does mean a healthy mind. In the last decade it became clear that regular exercise beneficially affects brain function. Exercise boosts brain power by stimulating formation of new brain cells (neurons), the process known as neurogenesis2. Also, exercise strengthens connections between those cells. Researchers have found the areas of the brain that are stimulated through exercise are associated with memory and learning1.
Physical exercise may even help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. Several studies7-9 have confirmed that regular physical activity reduces the risk of cognitive decline and dementia in old age.
2Lifelong learning – your brain is a learning machine
For most of us, after we graduate from high school or college, our pursuit of new knowledge bottoms out over time. We may be masters at what we do, but we aren’t learning new things. There is clear evidence10-11 that education and learning produce favourable changes in the brain. Researchers believe that intellectual activity play a neuroprotective role against dementia. Some studies suggest that having a low level of formal education and poor linguistic skills is a risk factor for cognitive decline in later life.
But if you continue to learn and challenge yourself, your brain continues to grow, literally. Recent research12 have demonstrated that learning over time enhances memory and the survival of new brain cells. An active brain produces new connections between nerve cells that allow cells to communicate with one another. This helps your brain store and retrieve information more easily, no matter what your age.
How can you challenge yourself? Scientists agree that anything that is new and expands your knowledge will be effective:
* Learning to play a musical instrument
* Switching careers or starting a new one
* Starting a new hobby, such as crafts, painting, biking or bird-watching
* Learning a foreign language. According to the latest study speaking more than one language may slow the aging process in the mind.
* Staying informed about what’s going on in the world
* Learning to cook new dish
If you let your brain be idle, it’s not going to be in the best health.
3Mental stimulation
Researchers found that a woman’s memory can be impaired for at least a year after giving birth, although the effects are minor
Stimulate your brain. Make sure you’re actively problem-solving and having to use your memory. Just as physical activity keeps your body strong, mental activity keeps your mind sharp and agile. The more we think, the better our brains function – regardless of age. Without something to keep us mentally charged, our brains, like unused muscles, can atrophy, leading to a decline in cognitive abilities.
The study6, conducted by researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, found that mentally active seniors reduced their risk of dementia by as much as 75 percent, compared to those who do not stimulate their minds. Researchers from the Princeton University13 found that simple cognitive stimulation such as Bingo can be of great value to the daily management of Alzheimer’s patients.
Some good ways to stimulate your mind:
* Travel
* Going to museums
* Reading books, newspapers, or magazines
* Play ‘thinking’ games like cards, checkers, chess, crosswords, sudoku puzzles
* Scrabble or doing crossword puzzles
* Playing musical instruments
* Dancing
* Crafts such as drawing, painting, and ceramics
* Ditch the calculator once in while and forcing yourself to do the calculation
* Volunteering
4Social interaction – People are good medicine
“Social interaction” can be measured by how often people talk on the phone with friends, neighbors and relatives, how often they get together with them, how many people they can share their most private feelings and concerns with.
Men are one and a half times more likely than women to develop mild cognitive impairment (the transition stage before dementia), new research shows.
Socializing may have a protective effect on the brain because it’s a form of mental exercise. Not only does interacting with people stimulate the brain, but it can also keep you sharp, because dealing with people can be pretty challenging. Strong social ties have been associated with lower blood pressure and longer life expectancies.
And having no social ties is believed to be an independent risk factor for cognitive decline in older persons.
A U.S. team found14 that talking to another person for 10 minutes a day improves memory and test scores. They found that socializing was just as effective as more traditional kinds of mental exercise in boosting memory and intellectual performance. They also found that the higher the level of social interaction, the better the cognitive functioning. Social interaction included getting together or having phone chats with relatives, friends and neighbors.
In a study of more than 2,800 people ages 65 or older, Harvard researchers15 found that those with at least five social ties – church groups, social groups, regular visits, or phone calls with family and friends – were less likely to suffer cognitive decline than those with no social ties.
5Sleep & Nap
Sleep plays a crucial role in brain development and growth.
One of the explanations the science has come up with for the healing power of sleep is that sleep may contribute to neurogenesis, the formation of new nerve cells in the brain16. New research in animals17 provides a clue about how the sleep deprivation harm the brains – reduces the number of new brain cells. Without sufficient sleep, neurons may not have time to repair all the damage, and so could malfunction during the day.
Sleep is necessary for the brain to process and consolidate knowledge and for memories to form. Neuroscientists say that during sleep the hippocampus (where memory is stored) becomes highly active and moves knowledge from short-term memory to long-term memory18-19.
The memories laid down by the sleeping brain are of two kinds. Declarative memory is memory for information – facts, dates, and names. Procedural memory is what allows us to do things like play a musical instrument, ride a bicycle, or add up a bill. Scientists think these two types of memory are influenced by different parts of the sleep cycle. Slow wave sleep benefit mainly the consolidation of declarative memories. In contrast, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep seems to benefit procedural memory20.
A 45-minute midday nap can help boost your memory and remember facts, but only if you learned them well in the first place5.
According to animal studies, when you perform a task, the brain cells fire in a certain sequence. If you then fall asleep, the same cells automatically fire in an identical sequence without being distracted or disrupted by incoming visual stimuli.
There is a consistent pattern: Learn something new during the day, consolidate what you have learned during a good night’s sleep, then remember or perform the task better in the morning. However, sleep before learning is also critical in preparing the brain for next-day memory formation21.
Even a nap in the middle of the day may benefit some learning, according to a recent study5. Sleep appears to help “set” the declarative memories and make them easier to recall.
6Stress management
The brain uses 20 percent of our body’s oxygen and 20 percent of its blood.
Scientists believe people exposed to chronic stress tend to have elevated levels of cortisol – a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to acute and chronic stress. High cortisol levels are dangerous to the brain.
Some of the most impressive effects of the stress on brain are hippocampus atrophy, shrinkage of the hippocampus or prefrontal cortex (the area of the brain unique to humans), and even neural death in some brain regions24, 28. The hippocampus, a vital brain region for episodic, spatial, and contextual memory, has many cortisol receptors, which makes it especially susceptible to stress.
Severe stress lasting weeks or months can impair cell communication in the brain’s learning and memory region27. Increased stress hormones lead to memory impairment in the elderly and learning difficulties in young adults26.
Latest study provides the evidence that short-term stress has the same effect. Researcher from the University of California25 have found short-term stress lasting as little as a few hours can impair brain-cell communication in areas associated with learning and memory. They found that rather than involving the widely known stress hormone cortisol, which circulates throughout the body, acute stress activated selective molecules called corticotropin releasing hormones, which disrupted the process by which the brain collects and stores memories.
Stress is a constant in our lives and cannot be avoided. So, stress management is the key, not stress elimination. Several ways to help you manage stress in your daily life:
* See problems as opportunities
* Get away from the noise
* Exercise
* Learn relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation
* Cut down on unnecessary responsibilities and avoid over-scheduling
* Make time for leisure activities
* Get a massage
7Laugh & Humor
Laughter is the best medicine! We’ve heard the expression time and again. Medical world has begun to take more serious notice of the healing power of humor and the positive emotions associated with it. By having fun and laughing, your stress levels decrease significantly. Humor stimulates the parts of our brain that use the “feel good” chemical messenger dopamine41. Also, researchers found that humor improves memory39-40.
8Healthy breakfast
It might be the last thing on your morning to-do list, or it might not be on your list at all. However, many studies have shown that having breakfast improves the ability of concentration, reaction time, learning ability, mood and memory, whereas skipping breakfast reduces people’s performance at school and at work42, 43.
A recent study done at Cardiff University in Wales found that subjects who ate a high-fiber cereal in the morning showed a 10 percent reduction in fatigue, lower incidence of depression, and better cognitive skills. Fiber helps slow down the absorption of food in the stomach, so you have more energy for a longer period of time.
9Omega-3 fatty acids
High intake of omega-6 rich oils (such as sunflower or grape seed oil) may boost the risk of developing memory problems, say French researchers4.
Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for brain health – they provide the physical building blocks necessary for the development and maintenance of the structural and functional integrity of the brain. In fact, one of the omega-3 fatty acids, commonly known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), makes up a large portion of the gray matter in the brain and is vital for brain cells function. Adding more DHA to your brain directly influences cell-to-cell communication, affects nerve conduction and neurotransmitter release, and other things that allow brain cells to send messages to each other29. One 1999 review of studies on DHA, published in the journal Pharmacological Research32, found that the nutrient is essential to normal brain function, and that a diet rich in DHA improves learning, while a lack of DHA causes learning ability to suffer.
French researchers4 looked at the diets of 8,085 people older than 65 who did not have dementia at the start of the study. Over the following four years, 183 of the participants developed Alzheimer’s disease, and 98 developed another form of dementia. People who regularly consumed omega-3 rich oils, such as canola, flaxseed, and walnut oil, were 60 percent less likely to develop dementia than those who did not regularly consume such oils. The study also found that regular consumption of fruits and vegetables lowered dementia risk by 30 percent. People who ate fish at least once a week were 40 percent less likely to develop dementia.
Coldwater fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, and herring are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids (just be careful to eat this in moderation due to potential contamination with mercury). Dutch studies30-31 revealed that high fish consumption may reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive decline.
10Blueberries
Would you believe that eating this tasty, low-glycemic superfood every day was found by the USDA at Tufts University33-35 to slow and even reverse age-related brain decline, as well as improve short-term memory loss and help reverse age-related loss of balance?!
Blueberries are a major source of flavonoids, in particular anthocyanins and flavanols. Although the precise mechanisms by which these plant-derived molecules affect the brain are unknown, they have been shown to cross the blood brain barrier after dietary intake. It is believed that they exert their effects on learning and memory by enhancing existing neuronal connections, improving cellular communications and stimulating neuronal regeneration.
11Vegetables
Researchers found that eating vegetables appears to help keep the brain young and may slow the mental decline sometimes associated with growing old22. Cruciferous and green leafy vegetables including cauliflower, spinach, kale, broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprout and collards appear to be the most beneficial23. Researchers say that may be because they contain healthy amounts of vitamin E, an antioxidant that is believed to help fight chemicals produced by the body that can damage cells.
Three B vitamins, folic acid, B6, and B12, can help lower your homocysteine levels. Fortified cereal, other grains, and leafy green vegetables are good sources of B vitamins.
12Want to drink? Choose red wine!
People who drink to forget bad memories may actually be doing the opposite by reinforcing the neural circuits that control negative emotional memory3
While heavy drinking clearly causes serious problems for many people, drinking in moderation may be good for the brain.
Researchers found, intake of up to three daily servings of wine, unlike other alcohol beverages (liquor, beer), was associated with a lower risk of dementia37. This may be due to the ability of red wine polyphenols to protect brain cells against alcohol-induced damage38. There is well-documented evidence that resveratrol, a polyphenol found in red wine and red grape skin and seeds, has a significant antioxidant properties and produces neuroprotective effects36.
13Keep health problems under control
Many medical conditions, particularly those identified as risk factors for cardiovascular disease, are also risk factors for cognitive decline and dementia.
High blood pressure
High blood pressure in midlife increases the risk of cognitive decline in old age44. Use lifestyle modification to lower your blodd pressure.
Diabetes
Diabetes is an important risk factor for dementia45. You can improve blood glucose levels by eating healthy diet, exercising regularly, and staying lean. But if your blood sugar stays high, you’ll need medication to achieve good control.
High cholesterol
High levels of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol appear to significantly increase the risk of dementia46. Diet, exercise, weight control, and avoiding tobacco will go a long way toward improving your cholesterol levels.
High homocysteine
Research has shown that a higher than average blood level of homocysteine – a type of amino acid – is a strong risk factor for the development of Alzheimer disease and dementia47.
14Neurobics
Created by Lawrence C. Katz, Ph.D., a professor of neurobiology at Duke University Medical Center, neurobics is a unique system of brain exercises using your five physical senses and your emotional sense in unexpected ways that encourage you to shake up your everyday routines. Studies have shown that even small changes in daily patterns cause brain stimulation.
Neurobics can be done anywhere, anytime, in offbeat, fun and easy ways. These exercises can activate underused nerve pathways and connections, helping you achieve a fit and flexible mind:
* Drive to work a different route
* Get dressed with your eyes closed
* Brush your teeth with the other hand
* Unlock the door with your eyes closed
* Use your opposite hand to dial the phone or operate the TV remote
* Listen to music and smell flowers at the same time
* Shop at new grocery store

How to Recognize the Warning Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Wintry conditions are returning to the northern part of the world. Winter brings cold weather and, with it, a danger as old as man’s knowledge of fire. The danger is death or injury by carbon monoxide poisoning. Today, we tell about this ancient and continuing danger.
Several years ago, a family of five was enjoying a holiday in the American state of California, near the Pacific Ocean. The family included five children and their parents. The oldest child was twelve years old. The youngest was three.
The family was spending the weekend in a camper. A camper is a small shelter carried in the back of a truck. People can sleep in it for a few days.
The weather turned cold the second night the family stayed along the Pacific coast. The camper did not have any heating equipment to warm the space while family members slept.
Someone decided to heat the area by placing a charcoal grill inside the camper. The device burned a wood product, charcoal. The fire immediately warmed the family members. They all went to sleep.
The next day, other people found the family. The parents and their five children had died in their sleep. They died because they did not know that burning wood products creates a deadly gas – carbon monoxide.
Carbon monoxide poisoning is known as a silent killer. The California family went to sleep in their warm camper and never woke up.
Carbon monoxide poisoning causes death and injuries around the world. The poison gas has been a problem since people first began burning fuels to cook food or to create heat.
This gas is a problem in all parts of the world that experience cold weather. Last year, America’s Centers for Disease Control studied deaths linked to carbon monoxide poisoning. It found that the average number of carbon monoxide deaths in the United States is greatest in the month of January.
The study also found that carbon monoxide kills about five hundred people in the United States each year. And, the report said, about fifteen thousand people are taken to hospital emergency rooms for treatment of health problems linked to the gas.
Carbon monoxide is called the silent killer because people do not know it is in the air. The gas has no color. It has no taste. It has no smell. It does not cause burning eyes. And it does not cause people to cough.
Yet carbon monoxide gas is very deadly. It steals the body’s ability to use oxygen.
Carbon monoxide decreases the ability of the blood to carry oxygen to body tissues. It does this by linking with the blood. When the gas links with the blood, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it. Damage to the body can begin very quickly from large amounts of carbon monoxide.
How quickly this can happen depends on the length of time a person is breathing the gas and the amount of the gas he or she breathes in.
Carbon monoxide poisoning has warning signs. But people have to be awake to recognize them. Small amounts of the gas will cause a person’s head to hurt. He or she may begin to feel tired. The victim’s stomach may feel sick. The room may appear to be turning around. The person may have trouble thinking clearly.
People develop severe head pain as the amount of gas continues to enter their blood. They will begin to feel very tired and sleepy. They may have terrible stomach pains.
Carbon monoxide is measured in parts per million in a normal atmosphere. Breathing in two hundred parts per million of carbon monoxide will cause the first signs of poisoning. It will result in head pain, stomach problems and a feeling of tiredness after two to three hours.
A level of eight hundred parts per million will cause a person to lose consciousness. Victims will not know what is taking place around them. This will happen within two hours of breathing in this amount of carbon monoxide. Twelve thousand parts per million of the gas will cause death in one to three minutes.
Medical experts say carbon monoxide affects people differently. For example, a small child will experience health problems or die much quicker than an adult will. The general health of the person or his or her age can also be important.
An older adult with health problems may suffer the effects of carbon monoxide more quickly than a younger person with no health problems. People with heart disease may suffer chest pains. They may begin to have trouble breathing.
VOICE TWO:
Carbon monoxide does not always cause death. But it can cause many medical problems. Breathing low amounts of the gas for long periods of time can lead to permanent damage in the heart, lungs or brain.
Medical experts say small amounts of carbon monoxide over a long period of time can greatly harm an unborn baby.
What causes carbon monoxide gas? Any device that burns fuels such as coal, oil or wood can create the gas.
Water heaters that burn natural gas create carbon monoxide. Fireplaces and stoves that burn wood create the gas. Natural gas stoves and gas dryers or charcoal grills also create carbon monoxide. Automobiles create it. Any device that burns fossil fuels like coal, oil, wood, gasoline, kerosene or propane will produce carbon monoxide.
Experts agree that the leading cause of carbon monoxide poisoning is damaged equipment that burns these fuels. They say many people die or are injured by the gas because they do not use these devices correctly.
Experts say any device used to heat a home should be inspected to make sure it is working correctly. And, no cooking equipment like a charcoal grill should ever be used to heat an inside area.
Carbon monoxide gas is created by fuel burning devices because not all of the fuel is burned. Most devices used for home heating have a way to expel the gas from the home. For example, a fireplace has a chimney. Natural gas stoves or gas water heaters are usually connected to a device that safely expels the gas from the home. An automobile has a system for expelling unburned gasoline under and behind the vehicle.
Anyone who uses a device that burns fossil fuel must inspect the equipment carefully to reduce chances of carbon monoxide escaping. Companies that produce the devices usually provide directions about using the device correctly. These directions should be read and understood before using any equipment that burns fuel inside a home.
You can do a number of things to protect yourself from the effects of carbon monoxide. First, immediately leave the area if you recognize the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning in yourself or others.
Seek emergency medical services after you leave the area where you suspect the gas might be. Usually the treatment for carbon monoxide poisoning involves breathing in large amounts of oxygen. However, a doctor will know the best method to treat the effects of such poisoning.
Carbon monoxide does not quickly leave the body, even after treatment has begun. It can take several hours before the gas disappears.
If you suspect carbon monoxide is a problem in your home, you might try calling your local fire department. Many firefighters have the necessary equipment to find or identify the gas.
Carbon monoxide detectors
In many countries, it is possible to buy and use a special device that will warn when harmful levels of carbon monoxide are in the area. These devices can be linked to a home’s electric system. Others work with electric batteries. Experts say these special devices should be placed near sleeping areas in the home.
The most important weapon against carbon monoxide poisoning is the safe use of materials to heat any enclosed area. Safety directions that come with heating equipment must be followed. Older fossil fuel burning heating equipment should be inspected every year to make sure it continues to be safe. Knowledge about the dangers of carbon monoxide could be the most important information you ever learn.

15 Benefits of Performance Management
Performance Management (PM):
1. Helps you think about what results you really want. You’re forced to be accountable, to “put a stake in the ground”.
2. Depersonalizes issues. Supervisor’s focus on behaviors and results, rather than personalities.
3. Validates expectations. In today’s age of high expectations when organizations are striving to transform themselves and society, having measurable results can verify whether grand visions are realistic or not.
4. Helps ensure equitable treatment of employees because appraisals are based on results.
5. Optimizes operations in the organization because goals and results are more closely aligned.
6. Cultivates a change in perspective from activities to results.
7. Performance reviews are focused on contributions to the organizational goals, e.g., forms include the question “What organizational goal were contributed to and how?”
8. Supports ongoing communication, feedback and dialogue about organizational goals. Also supports communication between employee and supervisor.
9. Performance is seen as an ongoing process, rather than a one-time, shapshot event.
10. Provokes focus on the needs of customers, whether internal or external.
11. Cultivates a systems perspective, that is, focus on the relationships and exchanges between subsystems, e.g., departments, processes, teams and employees. Accordingly, personnel focus on patterns and themes in the organization, rather than specific events.
12. Continuing focus and analysis on results helps to correct several myths, e.g., “learning means results”, “job satisfaction produces productivity”, etc.
13. Produces specificity in commitments and resources.
14. Provides specificity for comparisons, direction and planning.
15. Redirects attention from bottom-up approaches (e.g., doing job descriptions, performance reviews, etc., first and then “rolling up” results to the top of the organization) to top-down approaches (e.g., ensuring all subsystem goals and results are aligned first with the organization’s overall goals and results).

Advantages of Eating Honey
Honey, one of the natural syrups, contains glucose, fructose, vitamins, and minerals. It offers a large number of benefits. Honey was considered good for health in ancient times, and the story continues till today even after scientific intervention—researchers also accepted its value and they endorsed its use in various ways. There is no doubt that eating honey is beneficial, but sometimes it can also be good if used as conditioner or moisturizer. Following are few of the advantages of eating honey:
Increases Antioxidant Level
Eating honey leads to increase in the antioxidant levels, which are helpful in protecting cell damages caused by free radicals. The ability of the honey to increase the antioxidant level can be determined by the color itself—darker the honey, higher will be the antioxidant levels.
Healing Powers
Honey has strong healing powers. For example, it can heal wounds and is also helpful in case of stomach aches and dehydration. Honey can also be used to cure ulcers—stomach ulcers, in particular. Honey can also cure certain allergies! Yes, it is true that honey can help a person suffering from allergy. The honey from the local area of the sufferer, in particular, can give best results. Above all, it does not contain any chemicals or harmful ingredients which are present in other medicines, and therefore, is free from side-effects.
Provides several vitamins and minerals
Honey contains many vitamins such as B1, B2, C, B6, B5, and B3 along with several minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphate, potassium, sodium chlorine, and sulfur. It also contains copper, iodine, zinc, and several kinds of hormones. All these are required by human body in some quantity.

Olive oil’s health benefits
The greatest exponent of monounsaturated fat is olive oil, and it is a prime component of the Mediterranean Diet. Olive oil is a natural juice which preserves the taste, aroma, vitamins and properties of the olive fruit. Olive oil is the only vegetable oil that can be consumed as it is – freshly pressed from the fruit.
olive oil
The beneficial health effects of olive oil are due to both its high content of monounsaturated fatty acids and its high content of antioxidative substances. Studies have shown that olive oil offers protection against heart disease by controlling LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels while raising HDL (the “good” cholesterol) levels. (1-3) No other naturally produced oil has as large an amount of monounsaturated as olive oil -mainly oleic acid.
Olive oil is very well tolerated by the stomach. In fact, olive oil’s protective function has a beneficial effect on ulcers and gastritis. Olive oil activates the secretion of bile and pancreatic hormones much more naturally than prescribed drugs. Consequently, it lowers the incidence of gallstone formation.
Olive oil and heart disease
Studies have shown that people who consumed 25 milliliters (mL) – about 2 tablespoons – of virgin olive oil daily for 1 week showed less oxidation of LDL cholesterol and higher levels of antioxidant compounds, particularly phenols, in the blood.(4)
But while all types of olive oil are sources of monounsaturated fat, EXTRA VIRGIN olive oil, from the first pressing of the olives, contains higher levels of antioxidants, particularly vitamin E and phenols, because it is less processed.
Olive oil is clearly one of the good oils, one of the healing fats. Most people do quite well with it since it does not upset the critical omega 6 to omega 3 ratio and most of the fatty acids in olive oil are actually an omega-9 oil which is monounsaturated.
Olive oil and colon cancer
Spanish researchers suggest that including olive oil in your diet may also offer benefits in terms of colon cancer prevention (5). Their study results showed that rats fed diet supplemented with olive oil had a lower risk of colon cancer than those fed safflower oil-supplemented diets. In fact, the rats that received olive oil had colon cancer rates almost as low as those fed fish oil, which several studies have already linked to a reduction in colon cancer risk.

How to avoid extreme sun exposure to prevent skin cancer?
* Sunscreen lotions are available to protect the skin from harsh sun rays. One need to apply it when one moves outside.
* Stay in shaded areas to avoid the direct sunlight. UV rays are the strongest between 10 AM and 4PM which is the time one needs to stay in a cool place.
* Use a sun hat to protect the sun rays falling directly on the face. The facial skin is very delicate and wrinkles faster when exposed to harsh sun rays.
* Cover the exposed body with cloth either by wearing a long sleeve or long pants, which has a tight weave.
* The color and texture of your clothes should ward off the heat. Light cool cottons are ideal for the summer.
* While tanning be sure that you do not suffer from sun burn.
* Avoid sunlamps or tanning booths.
* Check the skin every month for any traces of skin cancer.
* Any unusual spot on the skin consult the doctor.
* Do skin self-examination to take early precautions in avoiding skin cancer.

5 Simple Ways to Increase Your Intelligence
Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus. But if you never use your brain, or abuse it with harmful chemicals, your ability to think and learn will deteriorate.
Here are 5 simple ways anyone can squeeze a bit more productivity out of the old gray matter.
1. Minimize Television Watching – This is a hard sell. People love vegetating in front of the television, myself included more often than I’d like. The problem is watching television doesn’t use your mental capacity OR allow it to recharge. It’s like having the energy sapped out of a muscle without the health benefits of exercise.
Don’t you feel drained after a couple hours of TV? Your eyes are sore and tired from being focused on the light box for so long. You don’t even have the energy to read a book.
When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your friends or family, leave the tube off and have a conversation. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax.
2. Exercise – I used to think that I’d learn more by not exercising and using the time to read a book instead. But I realized that time spent exercising always leads to greater learning because it improves productivity during the time afterwards. Using your body clears your head and creates a wave of energy. Afterwards, you feel invigorated and can concentrate more easily.
3. Read Challenging Books – Many people like to read popular suspense fiction, but generally these books aren’t mentally stimulating. If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability you should read books that make you focus. Reading a classic novel can change your view of the world and will make you think in more precise, elegant English. Don’t be afraid to look up a word if you don’t know it, and don’t be afraid of dense passages. Take your time, re-read when necessary, and you’ll soon grow accustomed to the author’s style.
Once you get used to reading challenging books, I think you’ll find that you aren’t tempted to go back to page-turners. The challenge of learning new ideas is far more exciting than any tacky suspense-thriller.
4. Early to Bed, Early to Rise – Nothing makes it harder to concentrate than sleep deprivation. You’ll be most rejuvenated if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than 8 hours. If you stay up late and compensate by sleeping late, you’ll wake up lethargic and have trouble focusing. In my experience the early morning hours are the most tranquil and productive. Waking up early gives you more productive hours and maximizes your mental acuity all day.
If you have the opportunity, take 10-20 minute naps when you are hit with a wave of drowsiness. Anything longer will make you lethargic, but a short nap will refresh you.
5. Take Time to Reflect – Often our lives get so hectic that we become overwhelmed without even realizing it. It becomes difficult to concentrate because nagging thoughts keep interrupting. Spending some time alone in reflection gives you a chance organize your thoughts and prioritize your responsibilities. Afterwards, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s important and what isn’t. The unimportant stuff won’t bother you anymore and your mind will feel less encumbered.
I’m not saying you need to sit on the floor cross-legged and chant ‘ommm’. Anything that allows a bit of prolonged solitude will do. One of my personal favorites is taking a solitary walk. Someone famous said, “All the best ideas occur while walking.” I think he was on to something. Experiment to find the activity that works best for you.

Energy Drinks – more disadvantages then advantages
The energy drinks (like red bull) differ considerably from Isotonic drinks, despite being regularly confused as the same thing. The difference lies mainly in the presence of caffeine and taurine.
The CAFFEINE present in high doses in energy drinks acts on the brain, stimulating it, inducing him the feeling of energy without limits and getting you rid of the sensation of tiredness body. Yet this false energy that the person feels, has no match practice in calories actually available in your body, and this imbalance can be proven as dangerous, especially in a high intensity sport. In addition to caffeine leads to increased blood pressure and is not recommended for people with heart problems and hypertension

What is Acid Rain?
Acid rain is precipitation containing higher than normal amounts of nitric and sulfuric acid. According to the EPA, acid rain can either occur by wet deposition or dry deposition, occurring when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide react with the atmosphere. During wet deposition the gases react with water, oxygen and other chemicals. When this happens, various acidic compounds form, most commonly sulfuric and nitric acid. These acids are blown by the wind into areas with wet weather, where they fall in the form of rain or snow. If the acids are blown to areas with dry weather, they fall as dry deposition, clinging to dust or smoke, sticking to buildings and trees. The acid is then washed into the water system by rain.
Acid rain forms from both natural and man-made sources. Volcanoes and decaying vegetation can form sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Emissions from burning fossil fuels also produce acid rain. According to the EPA, in the United States most of the sulfur dioxide and a quarter of nitrogen oxides “come from electric power generation that relies on burning fossil fuels, like coal.” Winds have been known to carry the acid rain into parts of Canada.

The strategy sits for now on a table in a locked-down Afghan capital: Hand over security in all 34 provinces to the government by the end of 2014 — more than three years after President Barack Obama’s date for the start of an American troop drawdown.
By Tuesday, it will be adopted at a one-day international conference, giving war-weary Americans and Europeans a date for when their involvement in Afghanistan may begin to come to an end. It will also give President Hamid Karzai a chance to show whether his struggling government is making progress toward running the country.
Hello all,
Here is Kabul conference in my words that I present to all you.
The conference comes at a time of growing anxiety in the U.S. and Europe about the course of the war — concerns underscored by Taliban attacks on Monday that killed six Afghan police and two American soldiers. A major security operation virtually shut down Kabul for the conference in which some 60 nations will focus on the postwar transition.
Afghan officials want the U.S. and other international donors to give them a greater say in spending the billions of dollars in aid and reconstruction funds that have flowed into the country since the war began in 2001 — often with only limited results and amid allegations of corruption and mismanagement that have bolstered the Taliban in the eyes of many ordinary Afghans.
Talk of lofty development goals will take place against the backdrop of rising casualties, especially in the Taliban strongholds of the south and east.
Mindful that public patience is running out, the delegates will endorse the goal of gradually turning over security to Afghan forces by the time Karzai leaves office at the end of 2014, according to a draft communique obtained by The Associated Press.
The Afghan government and the international community are expected to agree on a plan to decide which of the 34 provinces would be ready for Afghan control and when. The communique however makes no mention of international troop levels during the transition period.
Citation for the above topic is Ass0ciated Press.
Thanks,
Najiba

Hello all,
This is a brief information about Kabul conference
Little expectations can be pinned on the Afghan reconciliation ‘package’ envisaged in Kabul Conference. Commitments, pledges and reiterations made during the event are but the replays of the recent past.
While Kabul Conference envisages reconciliation with Taliban, withdrawal of troops by 2014 and some administrative reforms, the stark flaws and contradictions evident in the conference do not characterise the event to be evaluated on a positive note as far as its outcomes are concerned.
Ironically, the statement of NATO’s Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen that NATO forces would stay in Afghanistan even after military control is handed over to Afghan forces came right in the middle of the Kabul Conference when the delegates were discussing troops withdrawal and pull-out strategy.
Best Regard,
Razia Rahimi

Hello All:
Questions start the minute the interview does, and to show that you are an exceptional candidate, you need to be prepared to answer not only the typical questions, but also the unexpected. You can expect questions regarding your qualifications, your academic preparation, career interests, experience, and ones that assess your personality.
1. Tell me about yourself
The most often asked question in interviews. You need to have a short statement prepared in your mind. Be careful that it does not sound rehearsed. Limit it to work-related items unless instructed otherwise. Talk about things you have done and jobs you have held that relate to the position you are interviewing for. Start with the item farthest back and work up to the present.
2. Why did you leave your last job?
Stay positive regardless of the circumstances. Never refer to a major problem with management and never speak ill of supervisors, co-workers or the organization. If you do, you will be the one looking bad. Keep smiling and talk about leaving for a positive reason such as an opportunity, a chance to do something special or other forward-looking reasons.
3. What experience do you have in this field?
Speak about specifics that relate to the position you are applying for. If you do not have specific experience, get as close as you can.
4. Do you consider yourself successful?
You should always answer yes and briefly explain why. A good explanation is that you have set goals, and you have met some and are on track to achieve the others.
5. What do co-workers say about you?
Be prepared with a quote or two from co-workers. Either a specific statement or a paraphrase will work.
6. What do you know about this organization?
This question is one reason to do some research on the organization before the interview. Find out where they have been and where they are going. What are the current issues and who are the major players?
7. What have you done to improve your knowledge in the last year?
Try to include improvement activities that relate to the job. A wide variety of activities can be mentioned as positive self-improvement. Have some good ones handy to mention.
8. Are you applying for other jobs?
Be honest but do not spend a lot of time in this area. Keep the focus on this job and what you can do for this organization. Anything else is a distraction.
9. Why do you want to work for this organization?
This may take some thought and certainly, should be based on the research you have done on the organization. Sincerity is extremely important here and will easily be sensed. Relate it to your long-term career goals.
10. Do you know anyone who works for us?
Be aware of the policy on relatives working for the organization. This can affect your answer even though they asked about friends not relatives. Be careful to mention a friend only if they are well thought of.
11. What kind of salary do you need?
A loaded question. A nasty little game that you will probably lose if you answer first. So, do not answer it. Instead, say something like, That’s a tough question. Can you tell me the range for this position? In most cases, the interviewer, taken off guard, will tell you. If not, say that it can depend on the details of the job. Then give a wide range.
12. Are you a team player?
You are, of course, a team player. Be sure to have examples ready. Specifics that show you often perform for the good of the team rather than for yourself are good evidence of your team attitude. Do not brag, just say it in a matter-of-fact tone. This is a key point.
13. How long would you expect to work for us if hired?
Specifics here are not good. Something like this should work: I’d like it to be a long time. Or As long as we both feel I’m doing a good job.
14. Have you ever had to fire anyone? How did you feel about that?
This is serious. Do not make light of it or in any way seem like you like to fire people. At the same time, you will do it when it is the right thing to do. When it comes to the organization versus the individual who has created a harmful situation, you will protect the organization. Remember firing is not the same as layoff or reduction in force.
15. What is your philosophy towards work?
The interviewer is not looking for a long or flowery dissertation here. Do you have strong feelings that the job gets done? Yes. That’s the type of answer that works best here. Short and positive, showing a benefit to the organization.
16. If you had enough money to retire right now, would you?
Answer yes if you would. But since you need to work, this is the type of work you prefer. Do not say yes if you do not mean it.
17. Have you ever been asked to leave a position?
If you have not, say no. If you have, be honest, brief and avoid saying negative things about the people or organization involved.
18. Explain how you would be an asset to this organization
You should be anxious for this question. It gives you a chance to highlight your best points as they relate to the position being discussed. Give a little advance thought to this relationship.
19. Why should we hire you?
Point out how your assets meet what the organization needs. Do not mention any other candidates to make a comparison.
20. Tell me about a suggestion you have made
Have a good one ready. Be sure and use a suggestion that was accepted and was then considered successful. One related to the type of work applied for is a real plus.
21. What irritates you about co-workers?
This is a trap question. Think real hard but fail to come up with anything that irritates you. A short statement that you seem to get along with folks is great.
22. What is your greatest strength?
Numerous answers are good, just stay positive. A few good examples: Your ability to prioritize, Your problem-solving skills, Your ability to work under pressure, Your ability to focus on projects, Your professional expertise, Your leadership skills, Your positive attitude .
23. Tell me about your dream job.
Stay away from a specific job. You cannot win. If you say the job you are contending for is it, you strain credibility. If you say another job is it, you plant the suspicion that you will be dissatisfied with this position if hired. The best is to stay genetic and say something like: A job where I love the work, like the people, can contribute and can’t wait to get to work.
24. Why do you think you would do well at this job?
Give several reasons and include skills, experience and interest.
25. What are you looking for in a job?
See answer # 23
26. What kind of person would you refuse to work with?
Do not be trivial. It would take disloyalty to the organization, violence or lawbreaking to get you to object. Minor objections will label you as a whiner.
27. What is more important to you: the money or the work?
Money is always important, but the work is the most important. There is no better answer.
28. What would your previous supervisor say your strongest point is?
There are numerous good possibilities: Loyalty, Energy, Positive attitude, Leadership, Team player, Expertise, Initiative, Patience, Hard work, Creativity, Problem solver
29. Tell me about a problem you had with a supervisor
Biggest trap of all. This is a test to see if you will speak ill of your boss. If you fall for it and tell about a problem with a former boss, you may well below the interview right there. Stay positive and develop a poor memory about any trouble with a supervisor.
30. What has disappointed you about a job?
Don’t get trivial or negative. Safe areas are few but can include: Not enough of a challenge. You were laid off in a reduction Company did not win a contract, which would have given you more responsibility.
31. Tell me about your ability to work under pressure.
You may say that you thrive under certain types of pressure. Give an example that relates to the type of position applied for.
32. Do your skills match this job or another job more closely?
Probably this one. Do not give fuel to the suspicion that you may want another job more than this one.
33. What motivates you to do your best on the job?
This is a personal trait that only you can say, but good examples are: Challenge, Achievement, Recognition
34. Are you willing to work overtime? Nights? Weekends?
This is up to you. Be totally honest.
35. How would you know you were successful on this job?
Several ways are good measures: You set high standards for yourself and meet them. Your outcomes are a success.Your boss tell you that you are successful
36. Would you be willing to relocate if required?
You should be clear on this with your family prior to the interview if you think there is a chance it may come up. Do not say yes just to get the job if the real answer is no. This can create a lot of problems later on in your career. Be honest at this point and save yourself future grief.
37. Are you willing to put the interests of the organization ahead of your own?
This is a straight loyalty and dedication question. Do not worry about the deep ethical and philosophical implications. Just say yes.
38. Describe your management style.
Try to avoid labels. Some of the more common labels, like progressive, salesman or consensus, can have several meanings or descriptions depending on which management expert you listen to. The situational style is safe, because it says you will manage according to the situation, instead of one size fits all.
39. What have you learned from mistakes on the job?
Here you have to come up with something or you strain credibility. Make it small, well intentioned mistake with a positive lesson learned. An example would be working too far ahead of colleagues on a project and thus throwing coordination off.
40. Do you have any blind spots?
Trick question. If you know about blind spots, they are no longer blind spots. Do not reveal any personal areas of concern here. Let them do their own discovery on your bad points. Do not hand it to them.
41. If you were hiring a person for this job, what would you look for?
Be careful to mention traits that are needed and that you have.
42. Do you think you are overqualified for this position?
Regardless of your qualifications, state that you are very well qualified for the position.
43. How do you propose to compensate for your lack of experience?
First, if you have experience that the interviewer does not know about, bring that up: Then, point out (if true) that you are a hard working quick learner.
44. What qualities do you look for in a boss?
Be generic and positive. Safe qualities are knowledgeable, a sense of humor, fair, loyal to subordinates and holder of high standards. All bosses think they have these traits.
45. Tell me about a time when you helped resolve a dispute between others.
Pick a specific incident. Concentrate on your problem solving technique and not the dispute you settled.
46. What position do you prefer on a team working on a project?
Be honest. If you are comfortable in different roles, point that out.
47. Describe your work ethic.
Emphasize benefits to the organization. Things like, determination to get the job done and work hard but enjoy your work are good.
48. What has been your biggest professional disappointment?
Be sure that you refer to something that was beyond your control. Show acceptance and no negative feelings.
49. Tell me about the most fun you have had on the job.
Talk about having fun by accomplishing something for the organization.
50. Do you have any questions for me?
Always have some questions prepared. Questions prepared where you will be an asset to the organization are good. How soon will I be able to be productive? and What type of projects will I be able to assist on? are examples.

Hello to everyone,
Shahira you wrote 4 interveiw questions and I would like to add 2 more questions.
5. What college or university courses did you like best and least? Why?
This question may be an icebreaker; it may be designed to discover the kind of applicant the organization is looking for. If your favourite class was something outside your program, prepare an asnwer that shows that you have qualities that can help you in the job you’re applying for: “My favourite class was Canadian Literature. We got a chance to think on our own, rather than just regurgitate facts; we made presentation to the
class every week. I found I really like sharing my ideas with other people and presenting reasons for
my conclusions abo.ut something.
6. Why are you grades so low?
If possible, show that the cause of low grades has now been solved or is not relevant to the job you’re applying for: “My father almost died last year, and my schoolwork really suffered.” “When I started, I didn’t have any firm goals. Since I disvoered the program that is right for me, my grades have all been B’s or better.” “Iam not good at multiple- choice tests. But you need someone who can work with people, not someone who can take tests.”

Community is a group of interacting species sharing an environment. In human communities, intent, belief, resources, preferences, needs, risks, and a number of other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness.
In sociology, the concept of community has led to significant debate, and sociologists are yet to reach agreement on a definition of the term. There were ninety-four discrete definitions of the term by the mid-1950s. Traditionally a “community” has been defined as a group of interacting people living in a common location. The word is often used to refer to a group that is organized around common values and is attributed with social cohesion within a shared geographical location, generally in social units larger than a household. The word can also refer to the national community or global community.

Phone Interview:
When you are asked to schedule a phone interview, though, don’t think you’re being let off easy! A telephone interview is no less important than the in person variety. This is not meant to be a casual conversation or a friendly chat. This is the real thing.
Here are some simple but important phone interview tips to remember before scheduling any telephone interview. Each and every point below needs to be adhered to or you could find yourself in the unemployment line longer than you envisioned.
When the call comes in to arrange the interview, make certain you know which job they are talking about! Too many job seekers don’t keep track of the jobs they apply to and end up trying to interview for the wrong position! It’s OK to ask the caller which position they are talking about if you have any doubt at all.
Add this appointment to your calendar. It’s amazing how many people forget to remember! As a business owner, I have personally scheduled hundreds of telephone interviews over the years and it never ceased to amaze me how many people were caught off guard when the phone rang.
Make certain you understand who is supposed to call whom.
Schedule a time when you know it will be interruption free. You can’t have a productive phone interview during a timeframe when you know the dog will be barking for his afternoon walk, the kids will come running in from school, or everyone is gathering in the kitchen waiting for dinner.
Remember – this is a real interview. Be prepared to have a detailed discussion of your background and experience as it relates to this particular opening.
Research the company if you haven’t done it already. You still need to sound interested and be able to handle an intelligent conversation about their products and services.
Watch your tone of voice and manner of speech. I don’t want to sound like your mother here, but it’s human nature to be more casual on the phone than sitting in front of someone who is dressed in a suit and staring back at you. On the other hand, don’t be too formal. You might come off as stuffy.
Get dressed! You’ll feel better and function better than sitting around in your jammies.
Sit up straight, at a table, with a pad of paper and a pen to take notes, and any documentation you need to get you through the conversation. Don’t stretch out on the couch, in the back yard, or even on your bed, during the interview.
Have your resume in front of you so you can reference it if necessary.
If you plan on using a cordless phone or a cell phone, make certain it is fully charged. You don’t want to get cut off just as you hear, “So, when can you….”
Whatever you do…do not use the bathroom while you’re on the phone! There is nothing more disturbing to an interviewer than hearing a toilet flush in the background! Too much info, too many visuals.
At the end of the interview make sure you understand what the next step will be. If you are told, “We’ll be in touch”, ask when that might be. If the only thing you hear is something like, “Thank you for your time”, again, ask what the next step will be. Even though this sounds like a brush off, many times it’s not.
No matter what, ask if it’s OK to follow up with the person who called by perhaps email. I love email simply because you aren’t putting someone on the spot. The interviewer can read your question or comment and think about a proper response.
Send a thank you note via email (if possible) within a few hours. This serves two purposes. It’s always in your best interest to thank someone for their time and interest, and reiterate how qualified and interested you are in the position (even if you’re not!). The email also provides the opportunity to open an ongoing dialogue with you and the interviewer; a nice way to further build rapport.
Thanks
Najiba

Who is Mother?
This is a question most of us would have never thought about as we take our mother for granted. She has been there always to take care of us. Speaking of definitions of mother, there is ample number of definitions expressing closely associated thoughts on the question what is mother?
Biologically mother is a female person, whose egg unites with a sperm, resulting in the conception of a child. A mother is the biological and/or social female parent of an offspring. In the case of a mammal such as a human, the mother gestates her child, which is called first an embryo, and then a fetus. This gestation occurs in the mother’s uterus from conception until the fetus is sufficiently developed to be born. The mother then goes into labor and gives birth. Once the child is born, the mother produces milk in a process called lactation to feed the child.
Who is mother: Technical Definitions?
To the question “who is mother” there are many technical definitions. One definition says that mother is a woman who has given birth to a child. Another technical definition says that a mother is the natural or social female parent of an offspring. Mother is the woman to whom one was born. A female person who is pregnant with or gives birth to a child is called as a “would be mother” or a mother to the new born respectively.
Who is mother: Adoption of the child?
It is not always necessary that somebody can only become mother if she has biologically given birth to an offspring. A woman who adopts and raises a child is more than a mother to that child. In animal kingdom also mother is referred to the female parent of an animal.
Who is mother: Sacred Relationship?
Mother is a term or a relationship which carries lot of respect and is closely associated with birth, nurturing, love, compassion, empathy and forgiveness. That’s why yin polarity, magnetic and nurturing, healer, mediator, soul of the world are all various connotations symbolized by mother. Further mother is also referred to one’s female ancestor, a woman who holds a position of authority and responsibility, a title for women respected for her wisdom and age and women who creates, originates or founds something.
Mother is also given as a symbol to a creative source, an origin and emotions like maternal love and tenderness, compassion, empathy and nurturing.
Woman in Islam: Role as Mother
Apart from her role as a wife, the Muslim woman has a very important role as mother. The status and value attached to parents in the Muslim world is very high. A woman becomes complete when she becomes a mother. Enjoying her power of creativity and grade of superiority over man, she experiences those precious feelings and senses, which nature gives only to woman. There is no doubt that as a mother, she is superior to man and is the nucleus of her family!
Noble Qur’an says:
“And your Lord has commanded that you shall not serve (any) but Him, and goodness to your parents. If either or both of them reach old age with you, say not to them (so much as) “Ugh” nor chide them, and speak to them a generous word. And make yourself submissively gentle to them with compassion, and say: O my Lord! Have compassion on them, as they brought me up (when I was) little.” Noble Qur’an (17:23-24)
Again Noble Qur’an says:
And We have enjoined man in respect of his parents – his mother bears him with faintings upon faintings and his weaning takes two years – saying: Be grateful to Me and to both your parents; to Me is the eventual coming. And if they contend with you that you should associate with Me what you have no knowledge of, do not obey them, and keep company with them in this world kindly, and follow the way of him who turns to Me, then to Me is your return, then will I inform you of what you did. Noble Qur’an (31:14-15)
In Islam every day is Mother’s Day (Status of Mother in Islam)
One day a man came to see the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. It seemed that he was trying to solve something but couldn’t quite work it out. So he asked the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. “Tell me, O Prophet of Allah! I have many relatives and many friends whom I love, and whom I wish to care for and help. But I often find it difficult to decide which of them has the greatest claim upon me? Which of them should come first?” The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny replied immediately, “Your mother should come first and before all others.”
The man was very pleased to have this clear guidance from the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny. But of course there were all his other relatives and his friends, so he asked again: “And after my mother, who has the greatest claim upon me?” The Prophet Muhammad’s, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny reply this second time surprised him. “Your mother!” he said again.
The man wondered why the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny was repeating himself. Perhaps he had not spoken clearly, the man thought, so he asked the question again, “What I want to know is, after my mother, who has the greatest claim upon me? Again the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny said “your mother!”
Your mother, your mother, your mother!
The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny had now said it three times. Slowly, the man realized why he had done so. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny means that my mother is extremely important, so much so that my duty to her must be stressed over and over again. Even so, the man’s thoughts ran on, “what about all the others I love and wish to care for?” Still uncertain and wanting to know more, he once again turned to the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny and said, “and after my mother, who comes after her? Is there anyone besides her?” The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny then replied “after your mother, your father.” And then? asked the man. “Then people who are nearest to you,” said the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny.
In universal religion Islam, mother has three times more rights over her off springs than their father because of her significant and crucial role in their birth, brought-up and home education.
In another hadith the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny has said: “Paradise lies at the feet of mothers.” In other words Paradise awaits those who cherish and respect their mothers.
Islam gave the first priority of obedience to the mother application to the saying (Hadith) of Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) that says:
Someone went to Mohammed (PBUH) and asked him “Who has the first priority to be well treated?”
Prophet Mohammed answered him “your mother”,
He asked “then who?”
He(PBUH)answered” your mother”
Asked agin”then who?”
Answered (PBUH)”your mother”
Asked “then who?”
Mohammed answered (PBUH)”your father”.
This is to show how important and precious mother is in Islam and how respectable
is her status BUT this status never lessen the status of the father at all. Islam gave the mother this status because:
1-Only God knows how do mother feel tired and sick during the pregnancy period.
2-The pain the mother bears during the delivery.
3-The breast feeding,
4-Who bears us when we are sick and stay up late for us? Mothers
5-Mothers have more patience on their children more than anybody else.
Many and many reasons that make mothers in a very high status in Islam as Mohammed (PBUH) told us anther (Hadith) that says “Heaven is under Mothers’ feet”. See how high and respectable the mothers are that God put the heaven under their feet?
We all know that we may have conflicts or disagreements with our mothers but Islam still order us that we must have the better part of the relationship and have mercy on them even they give us hard times, they bared us a lot and got tired from us alot as the Holy Quran versus said”oh God, have mercy on them as they brought me up when I was little.” hats how Islam ordered us to deal with our parents and specially our mothers.
When our mothers prayed for us it is one of the accepted prayers from God that’s because God knows it is true and pure, so we must try to make all our mothers prayers good for us and I believe that no mother could pray a bad prayer for her son whatever he did, because that’s the mother is.
And an important point that I need to show is that our lives is short and our mothers are too, so we must take advantage of every second we are with them because Mohammed (PBUH) told us a (Hadith) that says:
“When somebody’s mother die, an angel call him in the upper skies and tell him
“oh son of Adam(call his name),the first one and last one that loves you is died” and then all the angels feel sorry for him/her.”
So you must all use the chance to collect good prayers and warm hugs from our mothers before you are called in the upper skies.
Woman in Islam: Mother’s order
A mother’s order is to be respected, even in comparison with Allah’s command, on the condition that the action concerned does not fall within the imperative and obligatory injunction. An example of that is Jihad, in the way of Allah, or recommended prayers.
“A man came in the presence of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny and said: I like to perform Jihad in the cause of Allah, but my mother is not at all inclined towards my doing so. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny replied: Go back and remain with your mother. I swear by the Lord that has sent me on a true mission that to remain with one’s mother for one night (and serving her and doing good to her) is better than performing Jihad in the cause of Allah for a year.”
The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny said, “If you are performing recommended prayers and your father calls for you, do not break your prayers. But if your mother calls you, do break your prayers”.
The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny said: “A creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the Creator.”

Creating an effective agenda is one of the most important elements for a productive meeting. Here are some reasons why the meeting agenda is so important.
The Agenda
communicates important information such as:
1. topics for discussion
2. presenter or discussion leader for each topic
3. time allotment for each topic
provides an outline for the meeting (how long to spend on which topics)
can be used as a checklist to ensure that all information is covered
lets participants know what will be discussed if it’s distributed before the meeting. This gives them an opportunity to come to the meeting prepared for the upcoming discussions or decisions.
provides a focus for the meeting (the objective of the meeting must be clearly stated in the agenda)
How to Create an Effective Agenda
You’re responsible for planning your project meeting this month. Arrggh!! What to do? Now you understand how important an agenda is to the effectiveness of the meeting, but don’t know how to create one. Breathe easy! All you have to do is follow the steps outlined below.
1. Send an e-mail stating there will be a meeting, the goal of the meeting as well as the administrative details such as when and where it will be. Ask those invited to accept or decline the meeting. Make it clear that once they have accepted the meeting, they are expected to attend.
2. Ask participants requesting an agenda item to contact you no less than two days before the meeting with their request and the amount of time they will need to present it.
3. Once all of the agenda requests have been submitted to you, summarize them in a table format with the headings Agenda Item, Presenter and Time. It’s your responsibility to ensure that each agenda item is directly related to the goals of this particular meeting. If an inappropriate request is made, suggest that person send an e-mail or memo instead or recommend that this agenda item be discussed in another meeting. Also, you must be realistic in the amount of time you allocate to each presenter. Don’t cram an unrealistic number of agenda items into an hour meeting. When people accept an hour meeting, they expect to be finished in an hour. When meetings go over time, people generally tend to get uneasy. It’s better to schedule 50 minutes of discussion into an hour time slot. This way you have 10 minutes to spare and if you get done a little early, people will be pleased.
4. Send the agenda to all the meeting participants the day before the meeting with a reminder of the meeting goals, location, time and duration. At this time, ask the presenters if they are happy with the order in which they will be speaking and the amount of time they have been allocated.
5. Of course, the most important part of creating an effective agenda is to follow it during the meeting!
Best Wishes and Regards,
Razia

In preparation for the coming of the holy month of Ramadan I have written this short poem
Ramadan has arrived in time
It is the Moslem Holy Month
I welcome it with great fervor
I fast the coming thirty days
I share hunger with the poor
Oh Ramadan I must greet you
My passion to you never ends
Physically you make me healthy
Spiritually you clean my heart
Morally you give me strength
Welcome Ramadan
Welcome welcome Oh Ramadan
Welcome the month
Of the Holy Quran
Where we fast and gain hasanat (rewards)
In Ramadan, Allah revealed
The holy Quran
A guidance and mercy
To women and men
Welcome welcome…..
Oh Ramadan
You are the best month
Of the whole year
Where hearts and souls
are pure and clear
Welcome welcome….
Oh you who are asleep
Wake up, offer worship
For Allah will indeed
Reward you for your deed
Welcome welcome….
Lets talk about victories
In Ramadan’s entries
For the light of Islam
And the Glorious Iman (faith)
Welcome Welcome……
With best Regards

Nutritional tips for Ramadan
Share
* 1 A healthy Iftar goes hand in hand with the traditions: starting with 2 dates, then a glass of water or laban, then start the meal with a warm bowl of soup, a salad and the main course. Of course moderation is key to health!!!
* 2 Starting your Iftar meal with a warm soup comforts the stomach after a long day of fasting, replenishes your body with fluids and help prepare the digestive system for this blessed meal.
* 3 A balanced main dish at Iftar should contain a source of carbohydrates like rice, pasta, potatoes or burghul, as well as some form of protein like beef, chicken or fish, in addition to cooked vegetables. Balance and moderation are key to health!
* 4 Don’t forget to drink plenty of water during the holy month of Ramadan. At least 8 glasses distributed in small quantities so not to feel bloated.
* 5 To prevent getting thirsty during Ramadan, drink plenty of water, avoid foods that are too spicy or salty, and consume more fruits and vegetables that are refreshing!
* 6 Some people tend to be more sedentary during the month of Ramadan. To burn extra calories, make sure to be active by at least going for a walk everyday, 2 hours after having Iftar which allows you time to digest your meal.
* 7 Some people tend to eat more during Ramadan and this can lead to weight gain. Eating a healthy Iftar, eating starters and sweets in moderation, choosing more fruits and vegetables, avoiding sweetened beverages, and being active everyday will help you maintain your weight.

# 11 Eating your soup and salad slowly at Iftar will help you feel full and prevent you from overeating later from the main dish and sweets.
# 12 Delightful sweets in Ramadan are hard to resist. To avoid consuming too many calories, indulge and enjoy with your family the tasty and creative delights while making sure you always practice portion control and moderation!!!
# 13 Choose dates, dried fruits and nuts as part of your diet during Ramadan. These provide healthy nutrients and are packed with energy, thus helping you keep your vitality during this month.
# 14 To make your dishes lighter during Ramadan, adopt healthy cooking methods such as grilling, boiling, simmering and roasting and add taste to the food with a wealth of vegetables, herbs and seasonings.
# 15 Eating sweets immediately after Iftar will increase the size of your stomach and cause a delay in digestion. It will also cause a fluctuation in the blood glucose level, which will lead to you craving for more sweets. That’s why, it is recommended to have sweets in moderation 2-3 hours after Iftar.
# 16 Planning your meals and Ramadan recipes ahead will help you be organized during this month, maximize your energy and strength and gives you ample time to choose a variety of foods and healthy recipes to delight and nourish the family.
# 17 For balanced nutrition, try not to rely solely on Iftar to give you all your nutritional requirements. You can have other light meals before bed time such as low fat yoghurt and a whole-wheat cheese sandwich, or some dried fruits and nuts. Not to forget your Suhour that can include a glass of low fat milk, whole wheat bread and some legumes.
# 18 Avoid salty foods, such as canned or processed foods, salted nuts, and pickles, because these will increase your thirst during the fasting period.
# 19 2-3 dates are enough to break your fast on. Remember dates are also rich in calories, so don’t forget that moderation is required to help you maintain a healthy weight during Ramadan.
# 20 Make sure your soup includes generous amounts of vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, peas, green beans, squash, and carrots. These add vitamins and minerals to your soup as well as fibres which are essential for a healthy digestive system.

Nutritional tips for Ramadan
# 21 Be creative with your salad. The more varied and colorful vegetables you include in your salad, the more assorted are the nutrients and antioxidants you get. These help protect your body cells and promote good health especially during this holy month.
# 22 Divide your main course into three parts. Have one quarter of the plate filled with complex carbohydrates, one quarter with lean meat or meat alternatives, and half with vegetables. This will ensure that you have a healthy balanced meal.
# 23 If you feel full quickly and are unable to complete your Iftar, you can delay your main course until after your Maghreb prayer. This will ensure that you have enough time to digest your dates, soup and salad, preventing you from feeling uncomfortable as a result of overeating after a long day of fasting.
# 24 Be moderate in your consumption of appetisers such as sambosa, because deep fried foods are high in calories and fat that could increase cholesterol levels in the blood. Instead, when you can, try to have them baked and stuffed with low fat cheese.
# 25 Have Ramadan drinks such as jallab and dried apricot syrup in moderate amounts. Although they are a good source of sugar and some vitamins they are also a rich source of calories, adding up to your caloric intake. To quench your thirst, drink more water.
# 26 If you are a coffee drinker, try and reduce your coffee consumption two weeks prior to the Holy month of Ramadan in order to avoid headaches and sleepiness.
# 27 If you love to drink coffee during Ramadan, have a cup one to two hours after having a healthy balanced Iftar.
# 28 To control your calorie intake during Ramadan, try to limit your portions, especially sweets. Instead choose one type of sweets that you like everyday and have a 3-finger size portion.
# 29 If you are a regular athlete used to moderate or vigorous exercise, you can still maintain this by incorporating your exercise session just before Iftar. Make sure to hydrate immediately after your session and eat slowly to replenish your fluid and nutrients.
# 30 Having three meals is still important during this holy month: Iftar, a light evening snack, and Suhour. This would help you avoid continuous snacking throughout the non-fasting hours.

Hello all,
This is a small note about Ramadan.
THE PROPHET’S SERMON ON THE ADVENT OF RAMADAN
As we said before, holly Ramadan is Allah’s banquet, spread out for all his creature without the difference of class, caste, rank, race, language or geographical barriers.
It is not just a month of mere rituals as some may misbelieve but on the contrary signifies the very peak of spiritual purification which Islam has perfected.
The word Ramadan is derived from the root Ramada which indicates ‘heat’ and ‘restlessness’ and is said to signify the hard ship of a fast, like thirst.
A Hadith from the prophet says, Ramadan burns the sins and faults as fire burns wood.
Fasting is a key to a good health:
Fasting also has its advantages from the point of health and hygiene. Islam wants a Muslim to be healthy, clean, alert, agile and energetic.
<>, had said the prophet and physicians today acknowledge the many benefits of fasting that ensure health and soundness of one’s body and mind. Some of these positive points have a direct influence on psychology and physique of the fasting individual.

KINDS OF MEMORY
* Sensory Memory
Sensory memory is the earliest stage of memory. During this stage, sensory information from the environment is stored for a very brief period of time, generally for no longer than a half-second for visual information and 3 or 4 seconds for auditory information. We attend to only certain aspects of this sensory memory, allowing some of this information to pass into the next stage – short-term memory.
* Short-Term (Working) Memory
Short-term memory, also known as working memory, is the information we are currently aware of or thinking about. In Freudian psychology, this memory would be referred to as the conscious mind. Paying attention to sensory memories generates the information in short-term memory. Most of the information stored in working memory will be stored for approximately 20 to 30 seconds. While many of our short-term memories are quickly forgotten, attending to this information allows it to continue on the next stage – long-term memory.
* Long-Term Memory
Long-term memory refers to the continuing storage of information. In Freudian psychology, long-term memory would be call the preconscious and unconscious. This information is largely outside of our awareness, but can be called into working memory to be used when needed. Some of this information is fairly easy to recall, while other memories are much more difficult to access.

10 Ways to Keep Your Memory Strong
1. Brain food: Don’t let yourself run on empty. A balanced diet will help keep your mind running strong all day long. Make sure to include plenty of fruits and leafy green vegetables. They are loaded with essential antioxidants and nutrients to boost your brain power. Some of the best foods for thought include: blueberries, blackberries, fish and fish oils, eggs, spinach, strawberries and almonds.
2. Exercise: Get your body moving and your memory will soon follow. Exercise improves the heart’s blood flow. This, in turn, helps the brain function better and stay sharper. Studies have also found that cardiovascular exercises done over a long period of time help reduce the amount of brain tissue you lose as you age.
3. Brain Games: Unscramble your memory with Scrabble. Intellectually stimulating activities and games such as Scrabble, crossword puzzles and trivia games are great for boosting your memory. Have fun and challenge your brain with these fun memory games.
4. Pick Up a Book: The key to keeping your memory sharp is to continue to challenge it. Try to always have a book in hand. After you’re done reading a chapter or two, question and review the material you’ve read. Try to imagine what you’re reading. Discuss what you’ve read, and talk about it with friends or join a book club.
5. Take a Sip Down Memory Lane: Coffee is good for more than just getting you out of bed in the morning. Researches have found the stimulant affect of caffeine can help boost memory. Studies have also found that key enzymes found in green and black teas help improve memory functions.
August 19th, 2010 at 6:03 am
6. Cultivate interest: We tend to remember the things that we enjoy. Find ways to make a boring subject fun by associating it to something you already know. If you have to remember a list, try to make a fun sentence out of the first letters of each item or try categorizing things into a group. You can also use your imagination and create a fun story behind a subject to help make it easier to remember.

7. Catch some those Zzzz’s: Sleep plays a critical role in your physiological function and is vital for your intellectual development. Memory failure is a common occurrence for many sleep-deprived individuals. A study conducted at the University of Luebeck found that creativity and problem solving appear to be directly linked to adequate sleep.
8. Repeat After Me: When learning new information, the more you repeat it, the more likely you will be able to recall that information. Practice is the key to lasting memory. Practice is the key to lasting memory. Practice is the key to lasting memory.
10. Pick Your Own Brain and Share it with Others: Don’t keep your knowledge stored up. Teaching others is another great way to boost memory skills. You should also become your own teacher. Don’t be afraid of taking on new challenges. You might not be in school anymore but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t test yourself. After you learn something, it’s important to put the new information to use.

Hello all,
This is short information about education.
What is education?
It is much more than the knowledge we find in books.
If a man is truly educated, he will have been shown how to lead a happy and useful life and to be a good citizen of the country in which he lives; more even than that –a good citizen of the world.
He will have learnt how to behave towards other human beings.
By coming in touch with the active minds of his teachers and fellow students, he will have discovered what kind of mind he himself has; and he will have become proud to do what he knows to be right , and ashamed of doing what he knows to be wrong.
The cleverest man is not always the best – educated.
A wise man is one who is able to think clearly, and then act in such a way that the best result follow.
Knowledge is very useful, but knowledge by itself goes not make a man wise.
We need a special kind of education which will train us to use our knowledge wisely.
For example, there has been a great increase in scientific knowledge during the present century, but the wisdom of man has not increased at the same rate.
Wisdom guides us to make the best use of our knowledge. One of the most important things, therefore, to learn at a university is how the greatest men and women in the world have thought and acted in the past.
That is why every educated person must know something of history and literature, for these are the record of the lives and minds and ideas of such people.
We learn a great many facts in our study of medicine, law, science and languages, but unless we learn the wisdom that will help us to make the best use of these facts we shall not get full value of a university education.
Best Regards,
Shabnam

How do needs motivate people?
Needs Theories OF Motivation
The main theories of motivation fall in to one of two categories: needs theories and process theories. Needs theories describe the types of needs that must be met in order motivate individual. Process theories help us understand the actual ways in which we and others can be motivate. There are a variety of needs theories,
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory
It is probably safe to say that the best-known theory of motivations Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy (order) of needs. He hypothesized (imagined) that every human being has a hierarchy of five needs:
• Physiological. Includes hunger, thirst, shelter, sex, and other physical needs.
• Safety. Includes security and protection from physical and emotional harm.
• Social. Includes affection (liking), belongingness, acceptance, and friendship.
• Esteem (honor). Includes internal esteem factors such as self-respect, autonomy (self-rule), and achievement; and external esteem factors such as statues, recognition, and attention
• Self-actualization. Includes growth, achieving one’s potential (possible), and self-fulfillment.
This is the drive to become which one is capable of becoming.
As each f these needs becomes substantially satisfied, the next need become more important to fulfill.
Kind Regards

Hello all here are some information about Organizational Behavior (OB)
Isn’t organizational behavior common sense? Or just like psychology?
OB is built on contributions from a number of behavioral discipline, including psychology, sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and political science.
We hold generalizations about the behavior of people. some of our generalizations may provide valid insights into human behavior, but many are wrong. If understanding behavior were simply common sense, we would see fewer problems in the work place, because managers and employees would know how to behave. OB
Provides a systematic approach to improving predication of behavior that would be made from common sense alone.

Hello,
What is perception? Perception is the process by which individuals organize and interpret their impressions in order to give meaning to their environment. Individuals behave in a given manner based not on the way their environment actually is but, rather, on they see or believe it to be. An organization may spend millions of dollars to create a pleasant work environment for its employees. However, despite these expenditures, an employee who believes that his or her job is lousy will behave accordingly.
Thanks,
sincerly Robina

Sensations and Perceptions
Sensations can be defined as the passive process of bringing information from the outside world into the body and to the brain. The process is passive in the sense that we do not have to be consciously engaging in a “sensing” process.Perception can be defined as the active process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting the information brought to the brain by the senses.A) HOW THEY WORK TOGETHER:
1) Sensation occurs:
a) sensory organs absorb energy from a physical stimulus in the environment.
b) sensory receptors convert this energy into neural impulses and send them to the brain.
2) Perception follows:
a) the brain organizes the information and translates it into something meaningful.

What Is Motivation and How to Strengthen It
What can you do to enhance your motivation and awaken the power that will push you toward accomplishing your dreams, small and big? Here are a few suggestions:
Set a goal. If you have a major goal, it would be a good idea if you split it into several minor goals, each small goal leading to your major goal. In this way, you will find it easier to motivate yourself, as you will not feel overwhelmed by the size of your goal and the things you have to do, and the goal would seem more feasible and easier to accomplish.
Understand that finishing what you start is important. Hammer into your mind that whatever you start you have to finish. Develop the habit of going to the finish line.
Socialize with achievers and people with similar interests or goals, since motivation and positive attitude are contagious. Associate with motivated people, who share your interests.
Never procrastinate anything. Procrastination leads to laziness, and laziness leads to lack of motivation.
Persistence, patience and not giving up despite failure and difficulties keep up the motivation to succeed.
Read about the subjects of your interest. This will keep your enthusiasm and ambition alive.
Constantly affirm to yourself that you can and will succeed.
Look at photos of things you want to get, achieve or do.
Visualize your goals with happiness and joy.
Remember, if a certain goal is really important, you need motivation to keep you going.
